:: About Trieste

Trieste

What makes up the magic of Trieste, its elegant and slightly reserved aloof atmosphere, which is so different from the other cities in Italy? The difference lies in the history of these places: Celts, Romans, Longobards, the Republic of Venice and the Hapsburgs all found on this land an area to settle in.

When you walk through the streets of Trieste, visit the borough called Borgo Teresiano with its austere and stern style which will recall Vienna to your mind, stop and breathe the Mittel-European atmosphere of its cafés, walk along the same streets where James Joyce or Italo Svevo used to walk. Trieste is art and culture of Europe.

A view of Trieste

TriesteBorder territory, with one eye on the Adriatic Sea and the other on the harsh Karst headland. Enveloped in the fragrance of the Mediterranean bush, brighter and shinier than ever when the air is cleansed by the bora wind.

A Statue of Saba

TriesteThere is a special air. Here, at the extreme eastern edge of the Upper Adriatic. Here, in the bluest Mitteleuropean town, where great literary men like James Joyce, Italo Svevo and Umberto Saba took their inspiration.

Trieste, the town that embraces the sea or, rather, welcomes the sea home. Starting from piazza dell'Unità, one of the largest and most suggestive in the world among those overlooking the sea.

The Town hall

TriesteArchitecture. Because the buildings of Trieste speak with neoclassical, liberty, eclectic and baroque language. And they exist harmoniously with Roman remains, eighteenth century and Hapsburg style buildings.

The Synagogue

Sinagoga TriesteThe crossway of religions is palpable by anyone arriving in town, where hospitality has been found for centuries by, among others, the Greek orthodox and Serbian orthodox churches, the synagogue, the Lutheran evangelical church and the Helvetian one, which is the oldest in town.

Fragrance of coffee

Caffè TriesteThe people of Trieste have a veritable passion for coffee, and there are many different customs for savouring it. This is an ancient passion: enter the elegant historical cafès , where the literary ferments of bygone days still echo.

At the "bagno"!

TriesteThe people here take every opportunity to enjoy the sea, and populate the coast and bathing establishments - "bagni" in slang - all year round, for sunbathing, taking a dip or simply going for a stroll.

Slavian and German signs. In taste

TriesteFrom the typical osmizza, where they drink Terrano and Vitovska, to the cakes of Slavian or German origin, and also soups, like jota, and seafood: a cuisine well worth discovering.

Miramare Castle

Castello Miramare TriesteThe coast with its white cliffs, little bays and paths soaked in the fragrance of the Mediterranean bush.
The castles of Miramare and Duino directly overlooking the sea...
The Karst headland with unmistakeable colours, traditions and tastes, and very particular naturalistic aspects, including the Giant Grotto, the largest tourist cave in the world.
Then the nature reserves, like the marine one at Miramare, the one of the Duino cliffs, Val Rosandra, Mount Lanaro and Mount Orsario.
And the picturesque Istro-Venetian town of Muggia, with so many historical and culinary treasures.
